After finally caving in to my kids who begged me (AKA pestered me to death) to get them the full version of MineCraft (it wasn’t the cost, just the implications of them being able to spend MORE time on their devices and not engaging with their siblings, people in general :)), I attempted to load my credit card on to their devices through their personal account in order to make the purchase.
For the life of me I couldn’t remember what my kids account passwords were. Since they are connected to a Google Business account for my own company I was able to administer the accounts and reset their passwords to something I could remember.
So I reset the passwords for all my kids accounts and successfully loaded my credit card on to their accounts.
I went to the play store, selected Minecraft and hit the $7.99 button. After accepting the permissions I was presented with a small dialog saying, “Authentication is required. You need to sign into your Google Account.“.
Google, Stack Overflow, etc.
After this occurred on all of my kids devices I was completely at a loss. I made sure they were signed in to basically everything successfully and it would still fail here.
I hit Google, SO and a few other sites and they all claimed that Uninstalling Updates, Clear Data, Clear Cache, etc. would solve the problem but alas it didn’t.
I even removed their account from the devices and re-added it just to be sure, still no luck.
So eventually I read a reference to Google Wallet and I thought, “crap, I haven’t checked there” and low and behold, I went to the Google Wallet on their devices and found that their accounts had been suspended!
So I figured at this point that by adding MY credit card to my kids accounts looked dodge and that Google were simply trying to protect me from being used, but after contacting Google support it turns out that changing your account password disables your account by default as a security measure.
So after all that it seems that a default security precaution and a poorly worded error message sent me on a wild goose chase.
Oh btw, the kids all got their Minecraft in the end :)
